Granny botches bank heist so badly, teller asks if she’s ‘actually’ committing robbery

Grandmothers! We all love them. They knit. They bake. And apparently, they rob banks. Badly.

A Michigan matriarch has recently been sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison after her son turned her over to police on suspicion of attempting to rob a local Bank of American of $2,500. (She made off with $1,092.) Armed with only a very grandmotherly handwritten note, 53-year-old Dee Ann Sanders managed to complete the robbery, cruise around town on a crack shopping spree and be apprehended at her son’s home in no time. Classic Granny Sanders!

From United Press International:

“Her efforts were so amateurish and bungled … that the teller had to inquire as to whether Ms. Sanders was actually committing a robbery,” Stroba wrote in a sentencing memorandum in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids.

“Ms. Sanders knows what she did is wrong,” Stroba wrote. “Her demand note even apologized to the teller: ‘I need $2500 for my bills + grandkids. Keep hands on counter. Sorry + thank you,’ it reads….”

“Regarding deterrence, Ms. Sanders is a grandmother. She is, by her own admission, too old for this behavior.”

Too old indeed! Though, to the rest of us, Ms. Sanders’ behavior may seem incongruent with the position of grandmother, she is no stranger to legal infractions. Prosecutors cite her history of drug abuse and financial problems as the motive for her most recent crime. Still, they remain hopeful that Sanders can turn a new leaf.

“She has been forthcoming about her actions and the need for change in her life if she is going to return to society clean, sober, and poised for success in re-entry,” Stroba wrote.

Everyone, check in on your grandparents and elderly relatives this winter. They’re probably safe. Just make sure they’re on the right side of the law.
